Causes and Consequences of Anglo Nepal War

Political causes:

The defeated chiefs of the Baisi and Chaubisi principalities were taking refuge in India. India was under the British rule and they wanted to get back their territories. Thus they were helping the British East India Company. The Prime Minister of Nepal, Bhimsen Thapa, with the help of Panjab, Gwalior and Merath, wanted to oust the British power not only from Indea but from Asia also. Thus, the British wer aware of Bhimsen Thapa. Bhimsen Thapa, a patriot was against the imperialistic policy of the British and he wanted to liberate Nepal from the foreign encroachment. From the national point of view his policy was most useful. In the present time, this policy is reasonable and useful. It is because nationality and self dignity are more important.

Economic causes

The economic condition of Nepal was good. Trade with Tibet and India was balanced. Nepal was earning from goreign trade and was producing and collecting arms. This activity was danger to the British Indea. THe Britishers were enchanted by the cold climate of Nepal. And also they wanted to enter into Nepal but Nepal was against it. Britishers wanted to sell their goods in Nepal and extend their trade upto Tibet through Nepal. They were also enchanted by the natural resources of Nepal. Basically they were keen on obtaining the herbs, woods and the fertile land of Terai of Nepal.

Immedeate causes

The disputed territory of Syuraj and Butwal was the main pretension of war with the British. The kings of Palpa and Pyuthan paid homage of the land to the Abadh nawab. After the conquest of Palpa and Pyuthan their territory came under Nepal, who did not pay its homage to Abadh. That cause was taken off by the British and became the main pretext to declare war against Nepal. The Governor Marquis of Hastings sent a notice to evacuate the debated land within no time to Nepal. But Bhimsen Thapa did not pay attention to it. Nepal decided not to loose Syuraj and Butwal. Thus, on 1814 A.D, Hastings declared war against Nepal.

Anglo-Nepal war continued for two years . Many warriors lost their lives to wave Nepal against the British power of Indea. But the Britishers were more powerful and Nepal could not get help from its neighbours. Indian state
